Wilmore-Richter American Legion Post 161 stands as a tribute to the sacrifices of Corporal William Wallace Wilmore Jr. and Private Benjamin A. Richter, local heroes who laid down their lives in World War I. From the heart of Arvada and Wheat Ridge, these brave men exemplified the utmost dedication to our nation. They are memorialized at the St. Mihiel American Cemetery, Thiaucourt, France, where they rest in honored peace.

Founded under a National Charter granted on May 28, 1928, our Post is dedicated to the principles of mutual helpfulness and community service. We strive to mentor our youth, promote patriotism, and advocate vigorously for the needs of veterans and their families. Our commitment goes beyond preserving the memory of our fallen heroes; it encompasses active involvement in securing critical benefits for veterans on Capitol Hill.

Membership in The American Legion is open to all veterans who served during qualifying periods in the U.S. Armed Forces. We welcome associated organizations, including the American Legion Auxiliary—I am proud to acknowledge the contributions of women who are veterans’ spouses, daughters, granddaughters, and great granddaughters. Additionally, the Sons of The American Legion play a crucial role, consisting of male descendants of veterans.

Through our collective efforts, we raise funds to furnish vital support for veterans and their families facing challenging circumstances. This includes providing financial assistance, scholarships, and disaster relief, ensuring that no veteran is left behind.
